Driving in Australia

Australia recognises the IDP under the 1968 Vienna Convention. Most rental desks ask for one if your domestic license isn't in English, and many will request it from English-license holders too. Without it, you risk being refused the vehicle.

Convention

Australia recognises the IDP under the 1968 Vienna Convention.

Australia is a signatory to both the 1949 Geneva and 1968 Vienna conventions, with the Vienna framework as the operative standard since 2002. In practice this means an IDP from any signatory country — including the United States, Canada, India, China, Japan, and all EU member states — is valid throughout Australia for up to 12 months of continuous stay.

Heads up: If you're staying long-term, most countries require you to convert to a local license after 3–12 months. The IDP covers the temporary visitor period only.
Driving rules

What to know before you turn the key

🛞

Drive on the left

Australia drives on the left, like the UK and Japan. The driver sits on the right. Roundabouts go clockwise.

🪪

Carry both documents

Your IDP is invalid without your domestic license. Carry both at all times — police will ask for both.

🚙

Vehicle class

A standard IDP "Class B" covers passenger cars up to 8 seats and 3.5t. Motorcycles need "Class A" on the same booklet.

🚸

School zones

40 km/h limits apply during school hours (08:00–09:30 and 14:30–16:00) at marked zones — fines are steep.

🍺

Drink-driving

0.05% BAC for full licenses. Zero tolerance for learner and provisional drivers. Random roadside testing is common.

📱

Mobile phones

Strict prohibition on handheld phone use, including at red lights. Cameras enforce this in NSW, Victoria, and Queensland.

⚠️

Road hazards

Wildlife can appear without warning at dawn and dusk in rural areas. Slow down and use high-beams outside urban zones.

Fuel & navigation

Fuel station density varies by region. Download offline maps before entering remote areas — mobile coverage can be limited.

Road signs

Signs you'll see on Australian roads

Australia uses internationally recognised road signs — these are the eight you'll encounter most.

FAQs

Common questions about driving in Australia

Do I need an IDP for Australia if my license is in English? +

Even if your license is in English, many rental companies ask for an IDP regardless and may decline the vehicle without one. Bringing it removes all doubt.

How long can I drive on my home license? +

Typically up to 3–12 months as a temporary visitor, depending on the country. After that you'll normally need to convert to a local license. Your IDP covers the permitted visitor period.

What if I get a traffic fine? +

Fines are usually mailed to the address on your rental agreement or forwarded from the rental company. Pay promptly — unpaid foreign fines can flag on future visa applications.

Are dashcams legal? +

Dashcams are legal in most countries and often recommended. Some jurisdictions restrict where the suction cup attaches on the windscreen — check the hire car guide.

How do toll roads work for foreign drivers? +

Many countries now use electronic-only tolling. Your rental company will typically handle it and charge a daily administration fee, or you can purchase a temporary pass for the journey.
